A cluster of unripe elderberries lies on smooth gray creek stones in bright sunlight. The berries are a mix of green, yellowish-orange, and red, attached to vivid magenta stems. A single blade of green grass crosses diagonally beside them; the rocky creek bed fills the sunlit background.

A close-up, ground-level view of an unripe elderberry cluster resting among rounded river rocks. Green and red-tinged berries branch from dark reddish-purple stems, with a few small green leaves nearby. Blurred sunlit foliage glows in the background under a strong, shallow depth of field.

Cyanocitta stelleri like to cut off bunches of Sambucus racemosa to eat the berries in private. Not all of them are great at picking ripe bunches 😅
